Dubai Municipality has launched a Dh112 million project to revitalize the historic Dubai Creek, focusing on the restoration and upgrade of its pier and retaining walls. This initiative aims to enhance the creek's functionality, safety, and aesthetic appeal, solidifying its position as a vital artery of the city.
The project encompasses a comprehensive overhaul of the 2.1-kilometer Deira pier, including the replacement and rehabilitation of damaged concrete wall sections. These improvements, reaching depths of eight meters and increasing the wall height to three meters, will ensure the safe docking of vessels navigating the busy waterway. Additionally, 200 new anchors will be installed to further bolster mooring capabilities.
Beyond structural enhancements, the project prioritizes flood prevention. Upgrading the creek's retaining walls aims to mitigate the risks posed by harsh weather and rising sea levels, safeguarding surrounding areas from potential inundation. This focus on resilience aligns with Dubai's commitment to sustainable development and climate change adaptation.
Dawoud Al Hajri, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, emphasized the project's significance in transforming Dubai into a more attractive and innovative city. He highlighted the creek's role as a vibrant symbol of the city's growth, facilitating the passage of over 13,000 ships annually and contributing significantly to the emirate's economic and social prosperity.
The project is divided into two phases, with the initial stage concentrating on the Deira side. Each segment of the pier will be sequentially addressed to minimize disruption to commercial traffic. The second phase will tackle the Bur Dubai side, ensuring comprehensive restoration of the entire creek infrastructure.
This Dh112 million investment reflects Dubai Municipality's dedication to preserving the city's heritage while fostering its future growth. By revitalizing the historic Dubai Creek, the project promises to enhance maritime safety, boost economic activity, and solidify the waterway's position as a cherished landmark for residents and visitors alike.
