Riyadh Vies for Global Talent in Ambitious Transformation

Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, is actively competing with major international cities like New York and Tokyo to attract skilled workers, according to a recent statement by Mayor Prince Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf. This drive for talent underscores the broader transformation underway in the kingdom, aimed at diversifying the economy and fostering innovation.

“Competition for talent is no longer regional or local. It's global,” Prince Faisal declared in an interview with Arab News. He emphasized Riyadh's unique selling proposition: a vibrant blend of tradition and modernity. “We are a global city, but with roots, with cultural heritage, with traditions,” he explained, “And I think that combination and that juxtaposition together is what creates a competitive advantage for Riyadh.”

This strategic shift towards a knowledge-based economy is part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, a comprehensive plan launched in 2016 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The plan aims to reduce the kingdom's reliance on oil and develop other sectors, including tourism, technology, and entertainment. Attracting and retaining skilled professionals is crucial to achieving these goals.
