UAE bracing up for heavy week-end rains

The United Arab Emirates, still recovering from February's heavy rain and thunderstorms, may face another round of wet weather as early as this weekend, according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). While the severity remains uncertain, the forecast sparks memories of the chaos caused by the previous downpours, prompting authorities and residents to prepare.

The NCM predicts partly cloudy to cloudy skies over some coastal and northern areas on Sunday, with a possibility of light rain increasing towards the night. Monday's forecast holds a higher chance of showers, potentially intensifying over northern, eastern, and coastal regions. This echoes the February deluge, which saw unexpected hailstorms, flash floods, and disruptions across the Emirates.

"The previous heavy rains highlighted the need for better preparedness," admits Ahmed Al-Mansoori, director of the NCM's weather forecasting department. "We're urging residents to stay updated with weather alerts and follow safety guidelines."

Residents are reminded of the valuable lessons learned in February:

  • Heed weather warnings: Closely monitor NCM updates and follow official instructions.
  • Secure belongings: Bring in outdoor furniture and secure loose objects to prevent damage from wind and rain.
  • Avoid flooded areas: Stay clear of low-lying areas and overflowing wadis prone to flash floods.
  • Drive cautiously: Reduce speed and increase following distance on wet roads.
  • Stay informed: Follow trusted news sources for real-time updates and emergency information.

Authorities have also taken steps to mitigate potential risks:

  • Reinforcing infrastructure: Drainage systems are being inspected and repaired to handle increased water flow.
  • Emergency teams on standby: Civil defense and rescue teams are prepared for rapid response.
  • Public awareness campaigns: Information on safety precautions and emergency procedures is being disseminated.
