Abu Dhabi Enables Remote Connections for Inmates During Ramadan

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) has announced plans to facilitate virtual visits for inmates in Correction and Rehabilitation Centres across the emirate during the holy month of Ramadan. This initiative aims to maintain family connections and offer a sense of normalcy for those observing Ramadan while incarcerated.

Inmates will be able to connect with families and relatives through a designated app called "Nafidhaty," which translates to "My Window" in Arabic. Visits can be scheduled electronically via the Abu Dhabi government services website (TAMM) or the Abu Dhabi Police website. Once approved, applicants will receive an SMS notification confirming the date and location (police station) where the virtual visit can be conducted using the app.

The ADJD has established specific timeframes for these virtual visits. Family and relatives of both male and female inmates can connect from Monday to Friday, between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Thursdays will be dedicated solely to visits with female inmates at Al Ain Correction and Rehabilitation Centres, with extended hours from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Embassies and lawyers will have a designated window for visits on Fridays, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM.

This program reflects the ADJD's commitment to upholding the well-being of inmates while adhering to necessary security protocols. Ramadan is a significant time for spiritual reflection and community within Islam. Maintaining family connections during this period is crucial, and the "Nafidhaty" app provides a safe and secure platform for virtual interaction.

The ADJD has not yet disclosed details regarding the duration of this program or if it will extend beyond Ramadan. However, the initiative highlights a growing trend within correctional facilities around the world to leverage technology in facilitating communication between inmates and their loved ones.
