China says Gaza war is 'disgrace to civilization'

Gaza Strip: China has unequivocally labeled the ongoing war in Gaza as a “disgrace to civilization,” urging an immediate ceasefire. The conflict, which has persisted for six months despite mediation efforts, continues to wreak havoc on the region. As the Muslim holy month of Ramadan approaches, US President Joe Biden has implored Hamas to accept a ceasefire plan with Israel. However, Egyptian mediators grapple with formidable obstacles in their quest for a truce, while the United Nations warns of impending famine for the beleaguered Palestinian population.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, historically sympathetic to the Palestinian cause, expressed his deep concern during a news conference in Beijing: “It is a tragedy for humankind and a disgrace for civilization that today, in the 21st century, this humanitarian disaster cannot be stopped.” China has consistently advocated for a ceasefire since the war’s inception when Hamas militants launched an attack on Israel in October.

The war’s devastating impact has transformed vast stretches of Gaza into a desolate landscape of gutted buildings and rubble, leaving its 2.4 million inhabitants grappling with a humanitarian catastrophe. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza reported that 20 people have died of malnutrition and dehydration, with at least half of them being children.

As the world watches, the urgency for peace grows. The international community must act swiftly, prioritizing an immediate cessation of hostilities and ensuring urgent humanitarian relief. The war’s toll on Gaza underscores the need for compassion, diplomacy, and collective efforts to prevent further suffering.
