The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is extending a helping hand to vulnerable communities in Chad during the holy month of Ramadan. A dedicated humanitarian team is leading the distribution of food parcels, ensuring both Sudanese refugees and local residents have access to essential supplies for their daily Iftar meals.
This initiative builds upon the UAE's ongoing commitment to supporting Chad. The Emirates Red Crescent, along with the Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation and the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, form the core of the humanitarian team on the ground. Their efforts are concentrated in Amdjarass, a city in northern Chad, which also hosts a significant Sudanese refugee population.
The UAE's intervention comes at a critical time. The ongoing conflict in Sudan has displaced countless families, forcing them to seek refuge in neighboring countries like Chad. This influx has placed a strain on Chad's resources, making it difficult for some communities to meet their basic needs.
Recognizing this challenge, the UAE has ramped up its Ramadan aid program. As of March 24th, 2024, five flights carrying a total of 172 tonnes of humanitarian supplies have landed in Chad. These critical resources translate to over 6,000 Ramadan baskets, specifically designed to cater to the needs of families during the holy month.
The distribution process is being carried out in close collaboration with local authorities in Amdjarass. This ensures the aid reaches those who need it most, targeting impoverished families, displaced persons, and Sudanese refugees across the city and surrounding villages.
The UAE's humanitarian efforts extend beyond food security. The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, a key player in the Ramadan program, is also focused on providing medical assistance. A field hospital in Amdjarass continues to offer treatment to patients and care for the elderly from underprivileged backgrounds.
This multifaceted approach reflects the UAE's unwavering commitment to supporting vulnerable communities, particularly during critical religious observances like Ramadan. By ensuring access to food and medical care, the UAE is helping families in Chad navigate the challenges of the holy month and build a brighter future.
