The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre (SZGMC) in Abu Dhabi has finalized preparations to accommodate a significant influx of worshippers and visitors during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan. This year, expectations are high for attendance to surpass previous years, reflecting a return to normalcy following the COVID-19 pandemic.
During Ramadan in 2019, the mosque witnessed nearly 1.44 million worshippers and visitors. To ensure a seamless experience for all, the SZGMC has established dedicated committees and teams tasked with providing comprehensive services and facilities around the clock. These efforts include close collaboration with government and private entities to streamline operations throughout the holy month.
A crucial aspect of the preparations involves bolstering transportation within the mosque complex. The SZGMC has deployed over 38 electric cars specifically designated to ferry worshippers from designated parking areas to the prayer halls. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and convenience, particularly for those with limited mobility.
Furthermore, the SZGMC is committed to reviving cherished Emirati traditions during Ramadan. In cooperation with the Ministry of Defence, the Centre will reinstate the firing of cannons to mark the commencement of the holy month, as determined by the Ramadan Moon Sighting Committee. This daily tradition will continue throughout Ramadan, signaling the Iftar (evening breaking of fast) time and culminating with the announcement of Eid Al Fitr, the celebratory occasion marking the end of Ramadan. The cannon firings will be broadcasted live on Abu Dhabi Media TV channels, allowing people from diverse backgrounds to virtually participate in this cultural heritage.
Beyond logistical arrangements, the SZGMC has curated a rich program of religious and cultural activities designed to foster spiritual growth and community engagement. This program includes special Ramadan night prayers (Taraweeh prayers), led by renowned reciters. Additionally, a series of religious lectures delivered by esteemed scholars and preachers will delve into a variety of religious, social, and cultural topics. Daily Dhikr sessions (sessions dedicated to the remembrance of God) will also be held, providing worshippers with opportunities for recitation of the Quran, supplications, and prayers.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a beacon of faith and cultural significance, not only for the UAE but for the wider Muslim world. By meticulously preparing for the influx of worshippers during Ramadan, the SZGMC ensures a welcoming and enriching environment for all who seek spiritual reflection and community during this sacred month.
