Oman's Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP), the sole entity responsible for procuring power in the nation, has announced a significant step towards diversifying its energy mix and achieving its clean energy goals. PWP has launched a competitive bidding process for five new Independent Power Producer (IPP) wind projects. This initiative aligns with Oman Vision 2040, a national roadmap for economic and social development, and the country's commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050.
The tender, known as a Request for Qualification (RFQ), invites experienced developers to submit their credentials for participation in these wind energy projects. The five projects are strategically located across Oman's electricity grid, with three situated within the Main Interconnected System (MIS) and two within the Dhofar Power System (DPS).
Within the MIS, the largest project, Mahoot Wind I IPP, boasts a projected capacity range of 342-400 megawatts (MW). This wind farm is expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2027. The Duqm Wind IPP, also slated for Q4 2027 completion, will have a capacity between 234-270 MW. The Jalan Bani Bu Ali Wind IPP, the smallest of the three MIS projects, is anticipated to generate 91-105 MW upon its commercial launch in the first quarter of 2027.
The Dhofar Power System will benefit from the construction of the Dhofar Wind II IPP and the Sadah Wind IPP. Dhofar Wind II IPP, expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2027, will have a capacity range of 114-132 MW. Rounding out the five projects, Sadah Wind IPP is sized for a capacity range of 81-99 MW and is targeted for completion by the fourth quarter of 2027.
By incorporating these wind projects into the national grid, Oman aims to harness its abundant wind resources and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels for electricity generation. This shift towards renewable energy aligns with the global trend of combating climate change and fostering a more sustainable future.
The PWP's initiative is expected to generate significant interest from international and domestic renewable energy developers. The competitive bidding process will ensure that Oman obtains the most efficient and cost-effective solutions for these large-scale wind projects. The successful bidders will be responsible for financing, constructing, and operating the wind farms, while PWP will enter into long-term power purchase agreements for the generated electricity.
The development of these wind farms is anticipated to create substantial job opportunities in Oman during the construction and operational phases. Additionally, the influx of renewable energy will contribute to the nation's energy security and price stability in the long run. Oman's commitment to clean energy is a positive step towards a more sustainable future for the region.
