International Society of Addiction Medicine Endorses Abu Dhabi's Rehabilitation Reforms

The International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM) has expressed strong support for a new law regulating correctional and rehabilitation centers in Abu Dhabi. This legislation, enacted in January 2024, transferred the management of these facilities from the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters to the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department.

ISAM President Dr. Hamad Al Ghafri lauded the law's comprehensive approach, highlighting its alignment with the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) commitment to human rights and humanitarian principles. He specifically commended the law's focus on providing adequate care and support to individuals within rehabilitation centers. Dr. Al Ghafri views this development as a significant milestone for the UAE's global reputation on human rights issues.

The new law coincides with a broader shift in the UAE's approach to rehabilitation. Dr. Al Ghafri emphasized the country's proactive stance in addressing drug addiction and related human rights concerns. This proactive approach is evidenced by the establishment of specialized rehabilitation centers and the implementation of inclusive policies. These centers are now tasked with delivering not just punitive measures, but also health and social care services, educational opportunities, and professional training programs. The ultimate goal of these programs is to equip individuals with the tools they need to reintegrate successfully back into society.

ISAM's endorsement comes amidst ongoing efforts by the UAE to improve its human rights record. The organization views the law as a concrete step towards a more humane and effective rehabilitation system. The law's emphasis on healthcare, education, and social support aligns with international best practices in addiction treatment and rehabilitation.

This legislative change is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of many in Abu Dhabi. By prioritizing rehabilitation and reintegration, the UAE is taking a significant step forward in its approach to addiction and criminal justice.
