UAE Braces for Potential Flash Floods as Severe Weather Approaches

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is preparing for a weekend of potentially disruptive weather, with the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issuing warnings of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and even hail. The unsettled conditions are expected to begin Friday evening, March 8th, and persist until midday on Sunday, March 10th.

The incoming weather system is forecast to interact with a cold air mass, creating a period of heightened atmospheric instability. This instability will likely result in significant precipitation, accompanied by thunder, lightning, and the possibility of hail.

The NCM warns that these conditions could lead to flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and near overflowing waterways. Residents are urged to exercise caution in such areas and to avoid driving through flooded roadways. Additionally, strong winds associated with the thunderstorms could significantly reduce visibility and potentially cause unsecured objects to become airborne.

Authorities are advising residents to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and to follow any instructions issued by local emergency management teams. The decision to cancel outdoor events or implement remote learning in schools will be made by individual emirates based on the severity of the weather conditions in their respective areas.

The weather system is expected to first impact the southern and western regions of the UAE, including Al Dhafra, Al Ain, and Abu Dhabi. It will then gradually move eastward, reaching Dubai and the surrounding areas before finally affecting the northern emirates of Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah.

While the UAE is accustomed to occasional periods of rain, the intensity of the predicted downpour is a cause for concern. The NCM emphasizes the potential for disruptions to daily life and urges residents to take necessary precautions.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor furniture and belongings, stock up on essential supplies in case of power outages, and avoid venturing out during the height of the storm. Those who must travel should exercise extreme caution on the roads, be mindful of potential flooding, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

The UAE emergency management teams are on high alert and prepared to respond to any weather-related emergencies. Residents are encouraged to contact their local emergency services if they require assistance.
