A new report by Oliver Wyman, a global management consulting firm, reveals the UAE is the top performer in the Middle East for gender equality, but there's still room for improvement, particularly in the private sector.
The report, titled "Women at Work: Advancing Gender Equity in the UAE Private Sector," surveyed 500 women and 300 men and found that while the UAE scored 71% on the World Economic Forum's 2023 Gender Gap Report, the private sector needs further progress towards parity and inclusivity.
The study highlights key differences between UAE and other regions. Financial incentives are the primary motivator for women in the UAE's private sector (33%), followed by recognition (30%). Notably, 61% believe their companies ensure fair pay, a perception that strengthens with seniority.
This contrasts sharply with the US, where work-life balance is the top priority for most women, according to a Gallup survey.
UAE women also demonstrate higher confidence in self-advocacy. Two-thirds have argued for promotions and 80% were successful, significantly higher than global figures. However, this confidence doesn't fully translate to meetings, where only 57% feel comfortable speaking up, compared to 69% of men.
The report emphasizes that gender equity benefits everyone. A study by the International Labor Organization found that 57% of companies saw improved business outcomes from gender equality initiatives.
The UAE has implemented policies to promote equality, including the 2015 Gender Balance Council, the 2011 Women on Boards initiative, and the 2022 Parent-friendly Label by the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority.
The report offers recommendations for companies, individuals, and policymakers. To enhance pay transparency and fairness, the authors suggest clearly defined and communicated pay scales with objective metrics.
The report by Oliver Wyman highlights the UAE's progress in gender equality while urging continued efforts, particularly in the private sector, to ensure a more inclusive and equitable work environment for all.
