António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, emphasized the critical role of water conservation in maintaining international peace during his World Water Day message. Guterres highlighted the growing urgency, stating, "Action for water is action for peace. And today it's needed more than ever."
The UN chief pointed to a world facing numerous challenges: escalating conflicts, social inequalities, rampant pollution, and biodiversity loss. He added that the accelerating climate crisis, fueled by continued fossil fuel dependence, further threatens global stability.
Guterres proposed water stewardship as a solution. He explained that responsible water management strengthens international cooperation, fosters ties between communities, and builds resilience against climate disasters. Furthermore, it drives progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which serve as the foundation for peaceful societies. These goals encompass improvements in health, reductions in poverty and inequality, and increased food and water security.
The Secretary-General emphasized the multifaceted nature of the water crisis. He pointed out that 2.2 billion people globally lack access to safe drinking water, while an even larger number, 3.5 billion, live without proper sanitation facilities. Guterres stressed the need for immediate action to achieve SDG 6, ensuring universal access to water and sanitation by 2030.
Guterres called for a renewed commitment to water security. He urged all stakeholders, including governments, businesses, and civil society, to collaborate in ensuring sustainable water management practices. This collaboration, he said, should prioritize human rights, placing the rights of all at the center of water governance. This includes women, girls, marginalized groups, and water defenders. Empowering these communities, Guterres argued, is essential to ensure their lived experiences and insights inform water resource management decisions.
The UN chief concluded his message with a call to action. He urged global cooperation in making water a force for collaboration, harmony, and stability. By doing so, Guterres declared, we can help create a world of peace and prosperity for all.
