The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has expressed strong support for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company's (ADNOC) ambitious plans to curb carbon emissions. Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the EAD, lauded ADNOC's recently unveiled decarbonization strategy, highlighting its critical role in achieving the emirate's climate change goals.
Dr. Al Dhaheri praised ADNOC's commitment to innovation and forward-thinking solutions, which she believes are essential for realizing the objectives of Abu Dhabi's climate change strategy. The strategy, a five-year roadmap, represents a significant contribution to the emirate's broader climate action agenda and aligns with the UAE's national target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The EAD and ADNOC have been collaborating for over 15 years to transform Abu Dhabi's energy sector. This partnership focuses on exploring alternative energy sources, such as hydrogen, and implementing measures to minimize methane emissions during production processes. Additionally, both entities work together to ensure the preservation of biodiversity within the emirate.
ADNOC's decarbonization strategy specifically targets a 25% reduction in the company's carbon intensity by 2030. This ambitious goal aims to position ADNOC as a leader in the oil and gas industry, achieving some of the lowest emissions per barrel produced globally.
The EAD highlighted the significance of ADNOC's achievements in 2022, particularly the reduction of nearly 5.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions across its operations. This milestone is viewed as a crucial step on the path towards achieving Abu Dhabi's climate action targets.
Dr. Al Dhaheri emphasized the oil and gas sector's dual role: a vital economic driver for Abu Dhabi and a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, ADNOC's commitment to emissions reduction is seen as a positive step towards a more sustainable future for the emirate.
The strong collaboration between the EAD and ADNOC signifies a united front in Abu Dhabi's fight against climate change. The success of ADNOC's decarbonization strategy holds the potential to propel the emirate towards achieving its climate goals and contributing to the UAE's national net-zero ambitions.
