Abu Dhabi Municipality is taking significant strides to bolster the emirate's rainwater drainage system. This multi-pronged approach aims to prevent flooding incidents like those witnessed in March, when torrential downpours overwhelmed the existing infrastructure.
The centerpiece of the initiative is a two-year, Dh39 million project slated to begin in the latter half of 2024. This endeavor will focus on enhancing the capacity and efficiency of the drainage network across Abu Dhabi Island. The modifications will encompass the construction of new rainwater drainage channels and the expansion of pumping stations in strategic locations, including Al Mussaffah, Al Maqtaa, Shakhbout City, Baniyas, and Mohammed bin Zayed City.
This undertaking aligns with the emirate's overarching stormwater master plan. This comprehensive strategy envisions a future-proof drainage system that can effectively manage anticipated rainfall patterns until 2030 and beyond. It acknowledges the continuous development of Abu Dhabi and incorporates sustainable practices into its design.
The impetus for this project stems from the challenges posed by the recent heavy rainfall. During that period, the municipality received a deluge of reports detailing property damage and flooding incidents. In a commendable display of swift action, municipal workers deployed over 100 water tankers, numerous pumps, and generators to remove a staggering 95% of the floodwater within 24 hours. However, the limitations of the existing drainage system were undeniably exposed.
The upcoming project builds upon Abu Dhabi's already robust drainage infrastructure. The current network boasts an impressive 149,707 collection points, 57 pumping stations, and a staggering 5,182 kilometers of sewage lines. The enhancements implemented through this project will significantly bolster this network's ability to handle future downpours.
