New Hopefuls Join Refugee Athlete Program for Paris Olympics

The Olympic Refuge Foundation (ORF) has bolstered its roster of aspiring Olympians with the addition of five refugee athletes. Hailing from Cuba, Iran, Sudan, and for the first time, Spain, these determined individuals will receive crucial support in their quest to compete at the upcoming Paris 2024 Games.

This scholarship program, funded by the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Solidarity program, provides targeted assistance to talented athletes who have fled their home countries. The comprehensive support package includes training expenses, coaching, and access to competition opportunities.

Among the new recruits is Fernando Dayan Enriquez, a canoeist originally from Cuba. Now training in the United States, Enriquez hopes to translate his talent onto the world stage. Joining him is Matin Balsini, a swimmer who escaped Iran and now finds himself honing his skills in Great Britain.

Another inspiring addition is Ramiro Mora, a weightlifter from Cuba who will also be training in Great Britain. Musa Suliman, a runner from Sudan, has found a supportive environment in Switzerland, while Aryan Saed Panah, a boxer from Iran, has the distinction of being the first refugee athlete to be hosted by the Spanish National Olympic Committee.

These five individuals represent a microcosm of the challenges and triumphs experienced by displaced athletes. Having overcome significant obstacles, they now share a common goal: to excel in their respective sports at the highest level. The ORF scholarship program empowers them to chase this dream by removing financial barriers and providing access to world-class training facilities and coaching.

The inclusion of a Spanish host nation marks a significant milestone for the program. It demonstrates a growing global commitment to providing opportunities for refugee athletes to integrate into sporting communities and showcase their talent on the international stage.

The stories of these five athletes, and the countless others like them, are testaments to the unifying power of sport. With unwavering dedication and the support of the ORF program, they stand poised to inspire not only their fellow refugees but also sports fans around the world.
