The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Türkiye are witnessing a significant strengthening of their bilateral relations, with both countries committed to a "holistic partnership" encompassing economic, political, and cultural spheres. This development is driven by high-level engagement, a burgeoning trade relationship, and a shared desire for regional stability.
The cornerstone of this burgeoning partnership is the frequent exchange of leadership visits. In November 2021, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited Türkiye, reciprocated by a visit from his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in February 2022. These visits culminated in a virtual summit last March, which witnessed the signing of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) – a significant milestone.
The CEPA is expected to be a game-changer for economic ties. By eliminating tariffs on most goods, the agreement aims to boost non-oil trade between the two nations to a staggering $40 billion within five years. This translates to an estimated 25,000 new jobs by 2031 and a 21.7% increase in UAE exports to Türkiye. Notably, Türkiye has become the UAE's fastest-growing trade partner among its top ten.
Beyond economics, the UAE and Türkiye are fostering cultural understanding. A February 2022 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cultural cooperation provides a framework for collaboration. This was followed by Türkiye's participation as the Guest of Honour at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2023, showcasing its rich literary heritage. Similarly, a strong Turkish presence at Expo 2020 Dubai further solidified cultural ties.
The strategic importance of this blossoming partnership cannot be overstated. Both the UAE and Türkiye are regional heavyweights, and their deepening cooperation has the potential to contribute significantly to peace and stability. This is particularly relevant considering the current geopolitical climate in the Middle East.
While the path ahead may not be without challenges, the UAE and Türkiye appear determined to navigate them together. Their commitment to a holistic partnership signifies a new chapter in their bilateral relations, fostering mutual prosperity and regional progress.
