The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Parkin, Dubai's leading paid public parking provider, have joined forces to significantly expand the emirate's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. This agreement signifies a major step forward in Dubai's commitment to sustainability and its vision to become a global leader in clean transportation.
Through a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), DEWA's "EV Green Charger" initiative will gain a foothold in prime locations across Dubai. Parkin, with its vast network of over 197, 000 parking spaces, will strategically integrate these charging stations, providing convenient access for EV owners. This collaboration not only enhances the EV charging experience but also aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in the city.
"Signing the MoU with Parkin aligns with our shared vision to support the government's efforts in enhancing the EV infrastructure, " said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. "This will provide easy access to charging facilities using the latest technologies to reduce charging time. "
The agreement highlights Dubai's commitment to environmental responsibility. EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, contributing significantly to improved air quality and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Expanding the Green Charger network directly supports Dubai's Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to make the emirate a global hub for clean energy and green technologies.
This initiative also aligns with Dubai's focus on customer experience. By strategically placing charging stations in convenient locations, DEWA and Parkin aim to address a key concern for EV owners – range anxiety. With readily available charging options, residents and visitors can confidently choose electric vehicles, knowing they can easily recharge their cars throughout the city.
The MoU signing comes at a time when Dubai is witnessing a surge in EV adoption. The number of registered users for the DEWA Green Charger initiative has surpassed 15, 000 by the end of March 2024. This growth underscores the increasing popularity of EVs and the need for a robust charging infrastructure.
DEWA's existing Green Charger initiative has already delivered impressive results. Since its launch in 2015, the program has provided approximately 26, 000 MWh of electricity for charging EVs, powering a cumulative distance of roughly 130 million kilometers. This translates to a significant reduction in carbon emissions and a positive impact on Dubai's environmental footprint.
The collaboration between DEWA and Parkin signifies a significant milestone in Dubai's journey towards a sustainable future. By expanding the Green Charger network and promoting EV adoption, Dubai is well on its way to becoming a leading city in clean transportation.
