The Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIH) brought a vibrant display of Emirati culture to the 20th Thessaloniki International Book Fair in Greece, held May 16th to 19th. Sharjah, the first Arab guest of honor at the fair, made a significant presence through the Sharjah Book Authority and various cultural institutions.
Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Musallam, Chairman of SIH, emphasized the importance of Sharjah's participation in this international cultural event. He highlighted how it underscores Sharjah's esteemed position on the world stage as a guardian of culture and heritage. Sharjah's leadership, under the guidance of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, has cultivated the emirate as a hub for cultural and scientific exchange.
The SIH's contribution to the Thessaloniki fair reflected this commitment. The Sharjah pavilion showcased a collection of the institute's publications alongside media displays documenting its local activities, programs, and events. These included the Sharjah Heritage Days and the Sharjah International Narrator's Forum. The exhibit also extended to SIH's contributions on a global scale, encompassing projects across all continents.
Beyond showcasing its publications, SIH brought Emirati culture to life at the fair. Visitors were treated to live demonstrations of traditional women's crafts, along with displays of folk costumes for all ages. An Emirati hospitality corner offered coffee and popular Emirati sweets, like dates, bethitha, and khunfaroush, embodying the spirit of Emirati generosity and hospitality.
The Sharjah National Folk Dance Troupe captivated audiences with traditional dances like the Ayyala, Liwa, and Al-Nuban. These energetic performances resonated with fairgoers, immersing them in the rich cultural heritage of the UAE.
SIH's participation at the Thessaloniki International Book Fair served as a bridge between cultures. The event provided a platform to share Emirati heritage with a global audience, fostering deeper understanding and appreciation.
