Abu Dhabi is revving up its engines to become a premier global hub for pharmaceutical and life sciences distribution. The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), the emirate's healthcare regulator, has joined forces with two other government entities – the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and Etihad Airways – to bolster its pharmaceutical prowess.
This strategic alliance, announced during the recent BIO International Convention in San Diego, aims to capitalize on Abu Dhabi's inherent strengths – its geographically advantageous location, a thriving investment landscape, and a highly developed logistics infrastructure. The collaborative effort will focus on attracting leading pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical technology companies to set up shop in the emirate.
The DoH brings its expertise in crafting a robust regulatory framework, ensuring the smooth functioning of the healthcare sector. ADIO, on the other hand, will leverage its investment platform to provide lucrative opportunities for companies seeking to establish a presence in Abu Dhabi. Etihad Airways, the national airline, plays a crucial role by offering its extensive air cargo network, ensuring the swift and efficient movement of pharmaceutical products.
This partnership aligns perfectly with the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030, a roadmap that aims to diversify the emirate's economy and propel it towards a future driven by innovation. By establishing itself as a pharmaceutical hub, Abu Dhabi aspires to not only become a leader in healthcare delivery but also serve as a vital link in the global pharmaceutical supply chain.
Dr. Asma Ibrahim Al Mannaei, Executive Director of the Research and Innovation Centre at DoH, emphasized the significance of Abu Dhabi's strategic location as a gateway to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This alliance, she expressed, will not only bolster the emirate's position in the global pharmaceutical industry but also ensure that patients across the region have timely access to the latest advancements in medical technology and treatment.
