Abu Dhabi Moves Forward on Mid Island Parkway Project

Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipality and Transport (DMT) is on the verge of awarding contracts for the first phase of the Mid Island Parkway Project (MIPP), a significant development for the emirate's transportation infrastructure. The MIPP is a key component of the Plan Capital urban development program, which aims to enhance connectivity and accessibility across Abu Dhabi.

Sources familiar with the project revealed that the DMT is finalizing negotiations for the three packages that comprise the first phase. The initial phase will connect the existing Saadiyat Interchange, linking E12 to the MIPP, and culminate at the recently opened Um-Yifeenah Highway. This section will significantly improve traffic flow between Saadiyat Island, home to cultural institutions like the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and the mainland.

One of the most noteworthy aspects of the first phase is Package 1B. This package entails the construction of a critical tunnel, designed on a design-and-build basis. The tunnel, measuring between 900 meters and 1 kilometer in length, will utilize the cut-and-cover technique to traverse the Khor Laffan Channel, effectively linking Saadiyat Island with Um-Yifeenah Island.

The MIPP represents a strategic investment in Abu Dhabi's future. By establishing a high-capacity corridor between key areas, the parkway will not only streamline traffic flow but also unlock further development opportunities on Saadiyat Island and surrounding regions. The project is expected to contribute to the emirate's economic growth by facilitating better connectivity for businesses and residents.

Furthermore, the MIPP prioritizes sustainability. The construction process incorporates eco-conscious practices, including the utilization of locally sourced materials for a substantial portion of the project. This focus on environmental responsibility aligns with Abu Dhabi's commitment to sustainable urban development.

The awarding of contracts for the MIPP's first phase signifies a major step forward for the project. With construction anticipated to commence soon, the development is poised to transform Abu Dhabi's transportation landscape, promote economic activity, and solidify the emirate's position as a progressive and environmentally responsible urban center.
