Uganda signed a significant agreement with the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a business association from the United Arab Emirates, to construct a brand new international airport near the nation's breathtaking Kidepo National Park. This project marks a major expansion for Uganda's aviation sector, bringing the total number of international airports in the country to three.
The new airport, which will be known as Kidepo International Airport, is strategically located close to Uganda's border with Kenya in the northeastern region. This positioning is expected to significantly bolster tourism in the area by making the majestic Kidepo National Park, renowned for its diverse wildlife population including lions, giraffes, and buffaloes, more accessible to international visitors.
President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda highlighted the importance of this joint venture, emphasizing that the agreement signifies a strengthening relationship between Uganda and its partners in the Gulf region. He further expressed optimism that this project will open doors for expanded cooperation in trade and investment between the two parties.
While the exact cost of constructing the Kidepo International Airport has not been disclosed, Ugandan officials confirmed that construction is slated to commence in August of 2024. Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, chairman of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, echoed this timeline.
The influx of tourists anticipated with the completion of the Kidepo International Airport is expected to generate a substantial economic boost for Uganda. The agreement also includes plans for the construction of tourist hotels within the Kidepo National Park itself, solidifying the government's commitment to developing the region into a premier tourist destination.
This project is not only expected to enhance Uganda's tourism industry but will also contribute to the nation's overall infrastructure development. Improved air connectivity paves the way for increased trade opportunities and strengthens Uganda's position as a regional hub.
The construction of Kidepo International Airport signifies a new chapter for Uganda's economic development and its commitment to showcasing the splendor of the Kidepo National Park to the world.
