The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has unveiled a new resource to empower businesses in creating tobacco-free workplaces. The "Tobacco-Free Workplace Guide" serves as a comprehensive handbook designed to equip both government and private entities with the knowledge and tools needed to establish smoke-free work environments.
This initiative aligns with the UAE's ongoing commitment to combatting tobacco use and aligns with the nation's ratification of the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in 2005. The FCTC is an international treaty that outlines measures to protect people from the detrimental health effects of tobacco use.
Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Sector at MoHAP, emphasized the significance of the guide. "MoHAP's Tobacco-Free Workplace Guide is a key resource that will assist businesses in fostering a workplace free from all tobacco products, " Dr. Al Rand explained. "This initiative aligns with the UAE's dedication to implementing effective measures that safeguard people from secondhand smoke exposure in workplaces, public transportation, and public spaces. "
The guide offers a multifaceted approach to establishing a smoke-free work environment. It outlines the well-documented health risks associated with tobacco use, not just for smokers but also for those exposed to secondhand smoke. This includes information on the negative impact tobacco has on the environment.
Furthermore, the guide provides practical steps for employers and employees. It details procedures for crafting and enforcing smoke-free policies, including designating smoking cessation support systems for employees who choose to quit.
The launch of the Tobacco-Free Workplace Guide signifies another step forward in the UAE's public health initiatives. The guide serves as a valuable tool for businesses of all sizes, empowering them to create healthier and more productive work environments for their employees. By promoting smoke-free workplaces, the UAE is not only safeguarding the health of its workforce but also contributing to a healthier nation overall.
