The United Arab Emirates (UAE) emerged as a key player in shaping international migration policies at the recently concluded 14th Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) held in Geneva, Switzerland. The UAE participated alongside France, the current forum chair, and Colombia, the incoming chair, within the framework of the Troika – a trilateral leadership body.
The UAE's presence at the GFMD, themed "The Impact of Climate Change on Human Mobility, " underscored the nation's growing role in addressing the complex challenges of migration. The three-day summit brought together over 1, 000 stakeholders, including government representatives, international organizations, academics, and civil society groups, to discuss collaborative solutions for a global phenomenon with multifaceted consequences.
The UAE's participation went beyond mere attendance. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE) actively contributed to the forum's agenda. Working alongside the International Labour Organization (ILO), the UAE played a critical role in developing a document outlining effective measures to safeguard the rights and well-being of migrant workers.
Furthermore, the UAE took center stage by leading a roundtable discussion titled "Work and Social and Economic Inclusion. " The session featured prominent speakers, including Zimbabwe's Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, and representatives from the MoHRE and the business community. The discussions highlighted the UAE's progressive approach to labor migration, focusing on social protection for workers, gender equality, and the empowerment of women.
The UAE's commitment to tackling climate change, a significant driver of migration flows, was also on display at the GFMD. The nation reiterated its pledge of $100 million to support developing countries worst affected by climate change, a commitment initially announced during COP28 held in the UAE.
The GFMD serves as a crucial platform for fostering international cooperation on migration issues. The UAE's active participation in the Troika reflects its recognition of the importance of collaborative efforts in navigating the complexities of global migration. By working together with other nations and international organizations, the UAE is helping to shape a more secure and prosperous future for migrants and their host communities worldwide.
