Abu Dhabi Extends Mawaqif System to Khalifa Commercial and Etihad

Abu Dhabi is set to expand its Mawaqif parking system to include the Khalifa Commercial and Etihad districts. This move, part of the ongoing Abu Dhabi Mobility initiative, aims to manage parking more efficiently and reduce congestion in these growing areas. The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) oversees this initiative, continuing efforts to align with the Abu Dhabi 2030 vision of enhancing urban infrastructure and accessibility.

The Mawaqif system, known for its structured parking management, currently operates extensively on Abu Dhabi Island. It classifies parking into standard and premium categories, with standard parking fees set at AED 2 per hour or AED 15 for a full day, while premium parking costs AED 3 per hour. Both options are available from 8:00 AM to 12:00 AM, with free parking on Sundays and public holidays.

Residents in the new areas will benefit from permits allowing them to park in designated zones without additional fees during specific hours. This feature is designed to ensure that residential parking spaces are available for residents, preventing overflow from commercial areas. Residents can apply for permits online through the Mawaqif portal or via SMS.

Payment options for parking under the Mawaqif system are varied and convenient. Drivers can pay via SMS, using the Mawaqif app, or directly at parking meters with cash or credit cards. There is also an option to use rechargeable cards, which can be linked to the Mawaqif account for easier management.

The expansion of the Mawaqif system into Khalifa Commercial and Etihad marks a significant step in Abu Dhabi's broader urban development plan. The goal is to streamline traffic flow, enhance the availability of parking spaces, and provide residents and visitors with more efficient parking solutions. This initiative is expected to ease parking challenges and support the overall development of these districts.

Abu Dhabi's focus on improving infrastructure through projects like the Mawaqif system highlights the city's commitment to sustainable urban growth. By integrating modern technology and efficient management practices, the ITC aims to create a more accessible and less congested urban environment, promoting a better quality of life for residents and enhancing the city's appeal to visitors and businesses alike.
