ALC and SSMC Collaborate to Promote Public Reading

A new collaboration between the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) and Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) aims to broaden the 'Reading in Public' initiative. This program seeks to create a culture of reading by making books more accessible in public spaces, such as hospitals. The agreement, signed at SSMC, outlines plans for establishing reading corners, organizing literary events, and providing a selection of books across various genres to patients and visitors.

Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the ALC, emphasized the initiative's role in enhancing the cultural environment and encouraging the love of reading among the community. He highlighted the therapeutic benefits of reading, particularly in healthcare settings where it can offer comfort and distraction to patients and their families.

SSMC's CEO, Dr. Naser Ammash, echoed these sentiments, expressing his enthusiasm for integrating literary activities into the hospital’s environment. He pointed out that such initiatives not only support patient well-being but also contribute to the overall healing process.

This partnership is part of a broader strategy by the ALC to promote Arabic literature and language through various community engagement programs. The initiative also includes collaboration with other public institutions and private sectors to foster a reading culture across the Emirate.

The 'Reading in Public' initiative has already seen success in other locations, including parks and shopping malls, where book kiosks and reading events have been well-received by the public. The extension of this program to hospitals like SSMC represents a significant step in reaching a wider audience and embedding reading into everyday life.

By integrating literary culture into healthcare settings, the ALC and SSMC aim to provide a unique and beneficial experience for patients and visitors, enhancing the community's engagement with literature and promoting a lifelong love of reading. This initiative underscores the importance of cultural and educational programs in public health and community well-being.

This collaboration is expected to serve as a model for similar initiatives across the region, highlighting the potential for cultural programs to contribute positively to public health and community development.
