Dubai Airport Welcomes 44.9 Million Passengers in 2024 First Half

Dubai International Airport (DXB) has set a new record, handling 44.9 million passengers in the first half of 2024. This marks an 8% increase compared to the same period last year, underscoring DXB's significant role as a global aviation hub.

The surge in passenger numbers is closely tied to Dubai's broader economic growth. Dubai's GDP reached AED 115 billion in Q1 2024, reflecting a 3.2% year-on-year increase. This economic vitality is mirrored in the airport's performance, driven by strong demand from key markets such as India, which remains DXB's top destination with 6.1 million passengers. Other notable markets include Saudi Arabia (3.7 million passengers), the United Kingdom (2.9 million), and Pakistan (2.3 million).

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, highlighted the strategic importance of DXB in attracting global talent, businesses, and tourists. He pointed to the robust recovery in passenger traffic from China, which saw over 1 million passengers, marking an 80% year-on-year growth and a 90% recovery compared to pre-pandemic levels. The airport's connection to 269 destinations across 106 countries, served by 101 international airlines, further cements its status as a leading global business and logistics hub.

The first half of 2024 also saw DXB managing 39.7 million bags, the highest-ever volume for this period, with a 6.7% increase year-on-year. Additionally, flight movements totaled 216,000, a 7.2% rise from the previous year, with January being the busiest month, recording 7.9 million guests.

The average number of passengers per flight movement stood at 213, with a steady load factor of 77%. Direct traffic accounted for 56% of the total, while transfer traffic comprised 44%. The second quarter alone saw 21.8 million passengers, a 7.5% increase from the same period last year.

DXB's efficient management of baggage and high passenger satisfaction are integral to its success. The airport achieved a 92% on-time baggage delivery rate for arriving passengers within 45 minutes of aircraft arrival.

Dubai's position as a global aviation leader is further strengthened by these impressive figures, projecting a positive outlook for the remainder of the year. With an annual forecast of 91.8 million passengers, DXB is on track to continue breaking records and enhancing its reputation as a premier global gateway.
