Saudi Arabia Sees Surge in Workforce Participation Among G20

Saudi Arabia has witnessed remarkable growth in both male and female workforce participation from 2016 to 2021, surpassing other G20 nations in this aspect. The Kingdom's National Labor Observatory reported that male workforce participation grew by 1.7 percent, outpacing Australia's 1.5 percent and other G20 countries. Female participation saw an even more significant increase, rising by 5.5 percent compared to 2.1 percent in Australia.

Several factors contribute to this growth. The Saudi government has implemented numerous reforms and policies aimed at empowering women in the workplace, reducing the gender gap, and encouraging economic participation. These efforts are part of Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on oil revenue by increasing the role of women in various sectors.

Between 2018 and 2020, the female labor force participation rate jumped from 20 percent to 33 percent, marking a 64 percent increase. This surge is particularly notable among women aged 40 to 54, who saw increases of more than 20 percentage points. Middle-skilled women with secondary education also experienced a significant rise in participation, nearly tripling from 9 to 25 percent.

The increase in female workforce participation has been accompanied by a broader shift in societal attitudes and job opportunities for women. Women are now entering professions previously dominated by men, and the government has made efforts to ensure gender equality and support for women in the labor market.
