Saudi Arabia moves forward with Taif Airport project bids

Saudi Arabia has officially initiated the bidding process for the development of a new international airport in Taif, aiming to enhance the country’s aviation infrastructure through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Located approximately 21 kilometers southeast of the existing Taif Airport, the planned facility is part of the broader push to modernize transportation systems and support the nation’s tourism and economic objectives.

The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has invited local and international developers and operators to participate in the project, which is set to include the design, financing, construction, and operation of the airport. The upcoming airport will feature a runway with a full-length parallel taxiway and aims to meet increasing passenger demand while adhering to international standards of efficiency and sustainability.

This project marks a continuation of Saudi Arabia’s strategy to leverage private sector expertise in its aviation sector, building on the success of earlier PPP projects such as the Medina Airport expansion. This approach not only attracts investment but also fosters knowledge transfer, bolstering local expertise in aviation management. Industry stakeholders have expressed strong interest in the project, reflecting confidence in the PPP framework.

Prequalification processes for potential bidders have been completed, and evaluations are underway. The project is anticipated to draw participation from several key players in the global aviation and infrastructure sectors, as well as financial institutions eager to support the endeavor. The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, has been engaged as an advisor for the project, underlining the initiative’s scale and importance.
