The eKey system, initially launched in 2012, was designed to facilitate secure access to eServices through Bahrain's National Portal, bahrain.bh, and other digital channels, eliminating the need for repetitive personal data entry. Over the years, the system has undergone continuous enhancements to meet international security standards and improve user experience.
The latest iteration, eKey 2.0, introduces several advanced features aimed at further simplifying and securing user interactions with government and private sector services. A notable addition is a dedicated mobile application, available on the eGovernment App Store as well as iOS and Android platforms. This app employs facial recognition technology and artificial intelligence to bolster security measures, streamline the registration process, and eliminate the necessity for in-person visits to service centers.
Mohammed Ali Al Qaed, Chief Executive of the iGA, emphasized that this partnership aligns with government directives to enhance public-private sector cooperation and invest in technology to improve government processes and service quality. He highlighted that the enhanced eKey system will unify secure access to both public and private sector services requiring digital verification, thereby improving security and enhancing the user experience for customers.
Shaikh Mohamed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, CEO of Beyon Digital, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating that the partnership aims to enable a national eKey system that adheres to the highest levels of efficiency and security, providing substantial advantages for citizens and businesses in both the public and private sectors. He noted that this development is crucial for a flourishing digital society and will lay the foundation for the next generation of digital services in Bahrain.
Christian Rasmussen, CEO of Beyon Connect, added that the project aligns with their strategy to deliver services with great innovation potential. He expressed anticipation for the pivotal changes that the enhanced eKey system will bring, helping to transform the range and caliber of digital services in Bahrain.
The eKey 2.0 system is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year, following the completion of all necessary procedures. This rollout will ensure that government entities, citizens, and private sector companies can benefit from the enhanced services.
