IDEX 2025 Showcases AI-Driven Defense Innovations

The International Defence Exhibition 2025, held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre from 17 to 21 February, has become a focal point for unveiling advanced artificial intelligence technologies poised to redefine modern warfare. Leading defense firms and emerging startups have introduced a range of AI-powered solutions, highlighting the increasing integration of autonomous systems in defense strategies.

TAG Dynamics, a prominent UAE-based defense manufacturer, presented its latest lineup of armored vehicles and cutting-edge technologies. Among the notable unveilings were the Sicarius Unmanned Ground Vehicle and the Agentic Guard Tower. The Sicarius UGV is designed to enhance operational capabilities in complex environments, while the Agentic Guard Tower offers advanced threat detection with 360-degree surveillance and a remote weapon station, providing comprehensive situational awareness.

In addition to established defense companies, IDEX Next_Gen provided a platform for five pioneering startups to showcase their innovative defense and security solutions. This initiative underscores the event's commitment to fostering innovation and supporting emerging technologies in the defense sector.

EDGE, a leading defense conglomerate, launched a next-generation AI-powered geospatial intelligence platform during the exhibition. This platform aims to enhance strategic capabilities across various domains, including air, land, sea, and space, by providing advanced situational awareness and decision-making support.

The integration of AI in defense systems has been accelerated by recent global conflicts, such as those in Ukraine and Taiwan. These confrontations have demonstrated the effectiveness of AI-driven drones and autonomous systems in modern combat scenarios. For instance, Ukrainian maritime drones equipped with machine guns have successfully repelled attacks, highlighting the growing reliance on unmanned systems and AI in defense operations.

Industry leaders emphasize the transformative impact of AI on warfare. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, speaking at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Saudi Arabia, predicted that future wars would be dominated by AI-powered drones, rendering traditional tanks obsolete. He highlighted the cost-efficiency and effectiveness of drones, noting that a relatively inexpensive drone could neutralize a significantly more expensive tank.

The defense sector has seen substantial investments in AI and autonomous technologies. Shield AI, a defense startup specializing in AI-powered software for autonomous aircraft and drones, recently achieved a valuation of $5 billion following a $200 million fundraising round. The company's "Hivemind" software enables drones and aircraft to operate autonomously without relying on GPS or communication links, reflecting the increasing demand for advanced AI solutions in defense.
