Launched in March 2024 through a collaboration between BlackRock and Securitize, BUIDL was designed to merge traditional money market fund characteristics with the advantages of blockchain technology. The fund invests entirely in cash, U.S. Treasury bills, and repurchase agreements, aiming to provide investors with a stable and yield-generating digital asset. As of March 2025, BUIDL has achieved a market capitalization of approximately $1.7 billion, positioning it as a leader in the tokenized U.S. Treasury products sector.
Carlos Domingo, co-founder and CEO of Securitize, emphasized the significance of this development, stating that the expansion to Solana is a natural progression given the blockchain's reputation for speed, scalability, and cost efficiency. He highlighted the growing demand for tokenized real-world assets and the importance of providing institutional-grade products on-chain.
The integration with Solana is anticipated to enhance BUIDL's accessibility and appeal, particularly among investors seeking efficient and cost-effective blockchain solutions. Solana's architecture is known for its high transaction throughput and low fees, which could improve the overall user experience for BUIDL investors.
BUIDL's growth trajectory has been notable. By July 2024, the fund's market capitalization had reached $500 million, reflecting a 240% increase by March 2025. This expansion underscores the escalating interest in tokenized financial instruments and the potential they hold for transforming traditional investment landscapes.
The fund's structure allows for daily accrued dividends, which are distributed to investors monthly through its partnership with Securitize. By August 2024, BUIDL had disbursed approximately $7 million in dividends to its holders, demonstrating its capacity to generate consistent returns.
Michael Sonnenshein, Chief Operating Officer of Securitize, commented on the fund's objectives, noting that BUIDL aims to address certain limitations inherent in traditional money markets. By leveraging blockchain technology, the fund seeks to enhance liquidity, transparency, and accessibility for investors.
