Tremors from Hebei Earthquake Felt Across Beijing

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck Yongqing County in Langfang City, Hebei Province, at 1:21 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center . The quake's epicenter was located at 39.42 degrees north latitude and 116.60 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 20 kilometers.

The tremor was felt in several districts of Beijing, including Daxing, Fengtai, Tongzhou, and Haidian. Many residents received early warning alerts on their mobile devices. Despite the widespread sensation, no casualties or property damage have been reported.

The Beijing Earthquake Agency reported that the maximum intensity reached level 4, which is below the city's seismic fortification standards. The agency stated that the earthquake is unlikely to affect normal life and production activities in Beijing.

In Hebei Province, tremors were experienced in Yongqing, Gu'an, Bazhou, Anci, Guangyang, and other counties of Langfang City. Communication networks, power supplies, and transportation systems remained operational. Local authorities have dispatched personnel to assess the situation, with no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.

The CENC noted that within the past five years, there have been eight earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or above within 200 kilometers of this epicenter, with this being the strongest.

Following the earthquake, the China Earthquake Administration initiated a third-level emergency response. The national earthquake early warning project automatically generated alerts, notifying over 250,000 users in the surrounding areas.

Residents in multiple regions, including Hebei, Beijing, and Tianjin, reported noticeable shaking. Some university students in Beijing evacuated to open areas for safety. The Beijing Earthquake Agency indicated a low probability of another earthquake of magnitude 4 or higher occurring in the same area soon. There are no significant seismic precursors in Beijing, and the likelihood of a magnitude 5 or above earthquake in the near term remains very low.
