Mundra Port Achieves Historic 200 Million Tonne Cargo Milestone

Mundra Port in Gujarat has set a new benchmark by becoming the first port in the country to handle over 200 million metric tonnes of cargo within a single financial year. This achievement underscores Mundra's pivotal role in the nation's maritime trade.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd , which operates Mundra Port, reported handling a total of 450.2 MMT of cargo across its network during the financial year 2024-25, marking a 7% increase from the previous year. Mundra Port alone contributed 200.7 MMT to this total, highlighting its significance in APSEZ's operations.

The surge in cargo volume at Mundra was driven by a 19% rise in container cargo and a 5% increase in liquid and gas shipments. In March 2025, APSEZ recorded its highest-ever monthly cargo handling at 41.5 MMT, reflecting robust operational performance.

Karan Adani, CEO of APSEZ, highlighted the company's growth trajectory, stating, "APSEZ has achieved a significant milestone in FY 2024-25, handling the highest ever cargo of 450 MMT. This includes our Mundra Port achieving an unprecedented 200 MMT."

Mundra Port's strategic location on the northern shores of the Gulf of Kutch, coupled with its deep-water capabilities, has facilitated the accommodation of large vessels, enhancing its cargo handling capacity. The port features 26 berths and dedicated terminals for various cargo types, including dry bulk, liquid, and container cargo.

The port's connectivity is bolstered by a privately developed 69 km rail network linking Mundra to the national railway system at Adipur, and road links to the National Highway network via State Highways 48 and 6. These infrastructural advantages have streamlined cargo movement, contributing to the port's increased throughput.

In addition to Mundra's accomplishments, APSEZ's Vizhinjam Port in Kerala reached a milestone by handling over 100,000 twenty-foot equivalent units during the same period, reflecting the company's expanding footprint in India's port infrastructure.

APSEZ's consistent investments in port infrastructure and technology have played a crucial role in enhancing operational efficiency and capacity. The company's focus on automation and mechanization has streamlined cargo handling processes, reducing turnaround times and increasing throughput.
